Top 9 Age Specific Video Games for Kids to Play During the Holidays
Finding great games for your child to play can be tricky. Not only is there a wide choice, but knowing which ones are both appropriate and popular isn’t always obvious. This year I have kept a long list of the best selling family games for AskAboutGames.
What to do before gifting a new console this Christmas
So let’s take a look at the list and see which of these best-selling games might be good for your family. To help you find the right games, we’ve grouped them based on their PEGI age rating. If you’d like more details on the game’s ratings, you can find them on the VSC Rating Board website complete with examiner reports or in their app. This is a great way to make sure your console is set up correctly.

2 overcooked (PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC)
This is cooking game with a difference. You have to work together to cook each of the dishes because you are in different parts of the kitchen. As the game progresses, the recipes become more complex and the cooking more difficult from increasingly bizarre positions.
This is a particularly family-friendly game because you can all play together (provided you have enough controllers). But also because children of all ages can help cut, serve and cook any plate of food.
Just Dance 2020 (Wii, Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC)
This is not only a great family game to play together to get you moving, but this year is a new game for the original Nintendo Wii. If you only have that old console, this will give you new life. Regardless of which platform you play on, it’s a lot of fun to dance along with the choreography on the screen.
Use the various motion-sensitive controller systems or camera trackers to make you dance around the living room to your heart’s delight. Kids love to play this game, but they love it even more when mom and dad get together. There is even a mode that makes it easier for young children to dance. And yes, it includes Baby Shark.
FIFA 20 (Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC)
We all know and love the FIFA Series, but it gets better every year. The 2020 version not only adds an updated line up, but a whole host of new ways to control the ball and play together.
While very young children will need help, there is a really useful handicap mode that will level the playing field between different players. Add to this the story mode and the ultimate challenge for team makers, and this is a game that will keep you entertained all season.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 (Switch)
This is cool ghost hunting that focuses on hijinx rather than scaring. You play Luigi as he spends the night in a haunted mansion. As you go through the different rooms and puzzles, you have to track down all sorts of mischievous ghosts.
It’s fun to play alone, but also with other people. Either in the 8 player co-op and multiplayer modes or simply taking turns to hunt down every single ghost in every room. The graphics are some of the best on the system and the gameplay will keep you playing until the new year.
Starlink: Battle for Atlas (PS4, Switch, Xbox One)
This is a game a bit like Skylanders, where toys unlock the game spaceship. While it didn’t sell well, it is now available for a really good price. For families, it is actually a brilliant experience. Embark on a space adventure that wanders from space dog fights to fully explorable planet surfaces.
The level of detail here in both the game and its toy spaceships is truly impressive. Plus, if you just want to play without the toys, you can buy a pack with everything unlocked. Played in single or split screen mode, this is really a lot of fun for families.
Plants vs Zombies; Battle for Neighbor ville (Xbox One, PS4, PC)
This is first person shooting game where the most damage you can do is pull up some weeds. You can customize your character and choose from 20 different classes of attack plants or zombies.
New this time around is the player versus enemy mode where you team up with three friends online and take back Weirding Woods, Mount Steep or Neighborville Town Center from the zombies. Then there’s the split screen split team mode where you can fight three players through free-roam or go online against 24 players in larger matches. However you play it, like Splatoon 2, this is a low-violence alternative that is as exuberant and fun as its more weapon-based counterparts.
This is a great game to go back and revisit with modern visuals and gameplay. The same action-adventure dungeon exploration is on offer here, but with a modern twist. For those 12 and above this is a game that has a good balance of humor and fighting.
Let’s follow the story of Sir Dan again, an unlikely champion who had an unfortunate end on the battlefield. He receives “a chance at redemption when his nemesis, the evil sorcerer Lord Zarok, accidentally resurrects him 100 years after that fateful day.” It’s a classic set-up that’s now well used, but here you can see why the original was so popular. This new iteration will keep you entertained for a long time.

Sea of Thieves (Xbox One, PC)
This is a seafaring tale of pirates with a twist. You enter a vast online ocean with lots of other players piloting their own ships. Not only that, but you can team up with other players and work as a team to take care of bigger ships.
The game was a bit sparse at first, but since launch it has become full of stories, research and a mature community that is fun to play with. If you are looking for a good way to experience online games with your child, this is a great game to play together.
Concrete Genie (PS4)
This is an unusual combination of platform adventure and painting. Players explore the wonderful world of craftsmanship and must create paintings on the walls of buildings to bring the characters back to the health of the city to life.
The game is the story of a young artist who stole his artbook from some bullies. It sounds a bit corny, but in practice it is a truly moving story that tackles the subject of identity and bullying with confidence and maturity. Whether played alone or together as a family, this is a game like no other worth checking out.
